Renting a flat in Izmir
Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city, stretching around a long bay on the Aegean coast. Rents are lower than in Istanbul, and a metro, tram lines and ferries link the districts on both sides of the bay.
Areas to look at
- Alsancak: central, bars and seafront
- Karşıyaka: across the bay, residential
- Bornova: university district
- Göztepe: seafront, quieter
Local rules
- Under Law 7464, a homeowner needs a permit from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to rent out a dwelling for tourism for periods of up to 100 days. Renting without a permit leads to administrative fines. (source, 2024-01)
