Renting a flat in Tokyo

Tokyo is enormous but easy to navigate thanks to its rail network. Apartments are compact and efficient, and staying near a JR Yamanote line station keeps most of the city within reach.

Areas to look at

  • Shinjuku: major hub, nightlife and transport
  • Shibuya: busy, young and central
  • Asakusa: traditional, near Sensō-ji temple
  • Nakameguro: quieter, canal-side cafés

Local rules

Private home-sharing (minpaku) hosts must register with the government and can host for up to 180 nights a year. Licensed aparthotels have no such limit.

  • Homes registered under the 2017 Private Lodging Business Act may host paying guests for up to 180 days a year; operating beyond that needs a hotel/inn licence or a special-zone permit. Local ordinances can restrict days further. (source, 2026)
