What to know before you rent
- Leases
- Leases signed since 1996 fall under Law 4 of 1996 (Civil Code): rent and duration are freely agreed and the lease ends when its written term expires. (source, 2026-07)
- Tenant rights
- Laws 164 and 165 of 2025 phase out pre-1996 'old rent' contracts: residential old-rent contracts end seven years after the law took effect on 5 August 2025, with statutory rent increases in the meantime. (source, 2026-09)
