Renting a flat in Florence

Florence's Renaissance centre is small and walkable, and most apartments sit in historic buildings within or just outside it. Many visitors stay a short walk across the Arno or beyond the old walls for quieter streets.

Areas to look at

  • Oltrarno: artisans and piazzas across the river
  • Santa Croce: central, lively in the evenings
  • San Niccolò: quiet, below the Piazzale Michelangelo
  • Campo di Marte: residential, outside the centre, better value

Local rules

Florence has banned new short-term rentals in its UNESCO-listed historic centre, and every short-term rental in Italy must display a national identification code (CIN).

  • Every property let short-term or for tourism must obtain a national identification code (CIN) from the Ministry of Tourism database and show it in all listings; the requirement applies from 1 January 2025. (source, 2025-01)
  • Florence banned new short-term tourist rentals inside its UNESCO World Heritage historic centre in 2023; lets already operating before the rule may continue. (source, 2023-10)
